I think most of you know I published my book last May. It was a rewarding but very time-consuming process. I mostly took a break from it after publishing, aside from a few speaking engagements, and watching sales grow organically. It did bring about some fun new introductions and ideas I could not have predicted before writing it. Dare I say, I might even have a few fans now. I suppose a book’s worth can be measured on how well it ages. While it has not even been a year, I do believe (aside from changes in tax laws) so far its messages have held up very well even in a tumultuous year with many things about our world changing rapidly. So I plan to do some speaking engagements, a book signing party (stay tuned), and develop more free resources that big-hearted business owners™ can use in practice through my book website (www.bigheartedbusinessowner.com). The book has also somehow recalibrated my brain such that I notice more about what others are doing in the business world with a big heart. I plan on pointing out some of these examples on the website so those with curious minds can do their own exploration. Some I think will be examples of individuals or business owners doing good things and some will be financial authors I read discussing similar themes. For instance, Ben Hunt of Epsilon Theory writes about the Friday Night Light’s tagline “Clear eyes, full hearts, can’t lose.” Clear eyes to see things as they are vs either as you want them to be or as others want you to see them—and full hearts meaning maintaining humanity for your fellow earth travelers. Pippa Malgram also had a great article on substack to start the new year https://drpippa.substack.com/p/wishes-love-and-cosmopoiesis about the promise of tech advances and the importance of maintaining beauty, love, creation and community.
Review for CMOH
Some of you may recall my notes on the Citizens Medal of Honor award earlier this year. Somehow I earned the great honor of being one of the judges for next year‘s awards. I read the stories of 96 Americans… Some young, some old, male, female, black and white, doing amazing things for their fellow Americans. Several of the stories brought me to tears, such as teachers protecting their children with an active shooter in the room. Or strangers running into burning buildings to save young families (this dude saved 4 people he didn’t know: https://mobile.twitter.com/joesampaul/status/1547665172365316103). Others were young teens, finding their passion and helping artists, musicians, or simply people in need. Probably one of the most amazing stories was a teenager named Anthony who saved three younger children who had fallen through the ice in Pennsylvania. When panicked kids screamed to him that they were going to die, this young hero somehow managed to say “not today”. The police arrived a few minutes later and ended up pulling him from the freezing waters. https://www.washingtonpost.com/lifestyle/2022/02/28/pond-rescue-pennsylvania-anthony-alexander/ After all that has happened lately, many may say that our nation has lost its soul. I say to them, maybe someday, but not today! Here’s to a wonderful 2023!
